When you meet someone who leaves a lasting impression...... You want to wrap them up and share that gift with your friends.
Janet McMinn, from Achieving You came to me as a client some 7 months ago. She was tired, burnt out and just wanting to be the absolute best mum and business woman she could be. We clicked.
This woman, mum, business owner and Personal Trainer extraordinaire, left me with a quote that is now something I say to myself every. single. day
"insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
When you meet someone who is a pearl of wisdom, you really need to share it. I can't possibly keep her all to myself. Any mums out there wanting help with their fitness goals and dreams, Janet is the most supportive, hard working and caring trainer and is herself just like you and I; trying to be the best at what she does with every single second of her day. Janet also loves to read a book or two and does not feel guilty about it. What a chick! - I have learned a lot about her and a lot from her, during our sessions together.
Q&A with with Janet from Achieving You.
1. What inspires you Janet ?
I like to feel complete at the end of the day. This means having done exercise, spent valuable time with my family, had a laugh, given my clients 1100% and a calm mind to sleep well.
2. Top tips for new mums wanting to regain their fitness
Core and glutes. Get these 2 right and then hit the hard stuff. These two take a battering during pregnancy and they are your fundamentals to all things exercise. Pay them some attention when re-entering the world of exercise and you will be more likely to avoid injury and be able to do what you want when you want.
3. Biggest achievement to date ?
Probably my 3rd degree black belt back in 2005.
4. What makes you tick ?
Helping people. I just love it! I love finding a new solution for someone to improve them. It's the small gains that keep people inspired to aim for more.
5. Favourite workout for new mums ?
Core and strength. We need to build core up again and also strength as it is low impact and essential for returning mums. Often we don't have the energy to push a 100% HIIT session either, so this combo helps get us moving without feeling guilty of not pushing hard enough. Functional strength is a great way to incorporate these two as the exercises require balance and stability through all muscles.
6. How do you juggle Mum life and your own business ?
While I don't know that we ever feel like we master the "balance", I definitely make sure I am present when I am at work, meaning I give 100% to my clients or when I am working on the business (computer time etc). And it's all baout Elke when she's awake and it's her time.
7. Biggest mistakes a new Mum can make when returning to fitness
Going too hard and setting unrealistic goals. You may be able to do what you want to your body pre baby, but we need to love and appreciate what our body has done for us post baby. It's all about being gentle to your body when returning to fitness. Goals are good, but we need to remember the massive change we have gone through and respect that.
8. Favourite inspirational quote
Albert Einstein: Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
9. What could you say to someone who was feeling like they don’t have time to exercise. Or feeling too shy to hit a gym or class.
Keep your eye on the long term goal and make small changes along the way. That means learning how to fit a small about of exercise into your week and building from there.
10. Favourite post-workout snack
I try and do a workout around a meal time. that way I am getting all I need to replenish my body; protein, carbs and fats - 3 egg omelette is Janets go- to with eggs from her own chooks, tomato, spinach, caesium and all of the trimmings. YUM!
Thank you for your time Janet.
